From Shoe Shop to Movie Set
A film production company recently approached the iconic shoe shop to use as a location for their latest project.
“I never thought my shoe shop would end up in a movie. Now my family run business since 1958 has received a second life—as a movie set! Lights, Camera, Shoes!” Rona McLaughlan – owner, said.
The film tells the story of a Nigerian father who, while running a struggling shop, instills life lessons and values in his son. The crew transformed the store for a week, creating a series of powerful and heartfelt scenes within its walls.
The film called Pasa Faho was featured in the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2025.
Starring beloved Nigerian stand-up comedian Okey Bakassi and impressive young actor Tyson Palmer as father and son, Kalu Oji’s MIFF Premiere Fund–supported feature debut is a down-to-earth, moving and gently funny portrait of suburban African-Australian life.
It’s a vibrant tribute to the city of Melbourne, to a cinematically underrepresented local community and to how, no matter where we’re from, we all ultimately constitute parts of a whole.

This store has been part of the Heidelberg West community for decades, and to watch it come alive in such a different way was both exciting and emotional. I loved seeing how the filmmakers respected the space while bringing their story to life—it’s something I’ll always treasure.”
